Guyanese boxer, Quincy Gomes, turned in a valiant performance but failed to get past Frenchman, Arnold Martinez, when they faced off at the Georges Donzenac Centre Sportif Départmental, Cayenne, French Guiana, last Saturday in the only professional bout on the two nation Inter Guiana Boxing Championship.
It was Gomes’ first overseas outing against a boxer of more experience with the home advantage but the Guyanese shrugged aside this advantage to commence the round aggressively. He attacked his man from the onset and had him on the back foot for the initial part of the round until Martinez asserted himself and dealt his opponent several wicked clouts to the head that slowed down the Guyanese pugilist.
Not to be outdone, Gomes entered the second round with similar aggression and scored with several combinations but the Frenchman resorted to his experience and boxed his way out of trouble with clever combinations. The fight gathered momentum in the third round and Gomes bustled forward attempting to establish his dominance but was met by a determined Gonsalves who used his long reach to full advantage to build up crucial points while keeping the busy Gomes at bay.
The fight continued at a vicious pace into round four and Gonsalves boxed around while pausing for the occasional flurry. Gomes held a high guard and shuffled forward but the Frenchman climbed on his bicycle and was very elusive. Gomes changed his mode of attack in the fifth round and pummeled Gonsalves to the body. The latter fighter took his blows like a man and responded with a four punch combination which Jones managed to evade through clever bob and weaving tactics.
The final round was a gem as both fighters attacked with venom; Gomes lashed out with a right cross but Gonsalves, sensing that he was ahead on the judges’ scorecard, opted to dance around while sticking out the jab with an occasional combination. Gomes demonstrated courage when he attacked his man, attempting to finish him off but Gonsalves refused to be caught in a brawl and retained a distance while scoring with jabs and right crosses. The French fighter eventually earned the nod on all three judges’ scorecard by margins of 60-64, 59-55 and 59-46.
