Flashback! Lindeners came out in their numbers last year to support the inaugural edition of the Mecca to Mackenzie II Basketball Playoffs. The Linden teams will need similar support tonight as Georgetown invades Linden for the second edition.
Mackenzie Basketball Playoffs in Linden.
The event is scheduled to begin at 7pm when Amelia’s Ward Jets take on Plaisance Guardians in the first of three games. Guardians had beaten Jets in Georgetown but the big question is whether the East Coast-based team can go 2-0 against the Linden side.
Jets will depend heavily on the Webster brothers, Alister, Allistair and Joel to bring them victory in this rematch. Plaisance has improved its roster, adding forward, Mark Richards and others and they have gotten the necessary results with Nikkoloi Smith back in the fold.
In the second game tonight, Retrieve Raiders from Linden plays Georgetown’s Colts United that also beat them in the City. Raiders leaned primarily on Neil Marks and Louis James without the due support from other players. It cost them heavily against the raging Colts, which has a quality group of guards.
Guards, Dave Causway and others will be coming to Linden to play ‘ball’ and it is up to Raiders to prevent them from going two-up as well. After all, the Linden teams will have the home-court advantage tonight in this return fixture that was the biggest basketball rivalry in Linden last year and which promises to continue that tradition.
The third encounter brings together new National Champions, Trinity Grid Holdings Pacesetters and Victory Valley Royals for a mega clash. Pacesetters will be bringing their band of players to avenge their loss to Royals last year in part one of this tournament.
Pacesetters’ forward, Randy Richardson, Royston Siland, guards, Stephon Gillis, Travis Burnett will be invading Linden to challenge Chris Williams, Marlon Pollydore, and forward Harold Adams among others.
Last year, Linden reigned supreme, but can Linden beat Georgetown twice in Linden? Tonight is to decide whether that’s possible. Linden won last year with rain interrupting the Ravens/Raiders showdown. Georgetown is breathing revenge tonight.
Comedian, Kirk ‘Chow Pow’ Jardine will be the MC with DJs Akelo and Winston providing the entertainment on what is expected to be an action-filled night of quality basketball, featuring the ‘best of the best’ among teams in Georgetown and Linden.
Antarctic Maintenance and Repairs, Insurance Brokers Guyana Limited (IBGL), Bernard Variety Store, Broad Money Spare Parts, The Trophy Stall, YK Investment Pawn Shop and Mackeson Stout are sponsors; the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) has also offered support for this event.
