DEAR EDITOR,
I would like to respond to the misguided and one-sided arguments presented supporting the Alliance for Change/A Partnership for National Unity so called pro-democratic alliance. From my point of view this alliance is neither credible nor pro-democratic and the opposition politicians and their supporters argue feebly to defend their position.
As of recently, various massive disclosures were made by members of the opposition on the dictatorial conduct of the leaders of the party with regards to decisions being made within the party. These parties are no strangers to undemocratic moves and the members of the party display a very ‘non-sequitur’ approach to answering questions posed to them on the topic. The members of the party rely on tactics to change the premise of the argument and no conclusive answer is ever given.
It was recently disclosed by Attorney at law Balwant Persaud and Mr. Sixtus Edwards, both of whom were members of the Alliance for Change, until recently, that the party has eroded into a monarchy. Mr. Edwards emphasized that there was no party democracy in the AFC and no proper nominations for posts were made. Mr. Persaud, on his day of resignation, spoke of the aristocracy within the party. It was stated that the party is headed by the ‘gang of five’ and there was approximately $21 million in unaccounted spending.
The AFC’s sister party, the APNU, is no different. It was stated by APNU member Sharma Solomon that the party’s elections were undemocratic. This party also has a fine history in the rigging of General elections and muzzling members such as Vanessa Kissoon when they choose to speak out. A party with such records cannot in any way be regarded as credible. I would like them to publicly defend these actions without providing feeble responses such as; “This coalition is in the interest of the people”. Parties throughout history have used the phrase “in the interest of the people”, it’s a cliché.
How can parties with undemocratic leadership and unaccounted spending form a pro-democratic and credible alliance? It’s a national disgrace that people have fallen prey to this grand act of hypocrisy; it shows an unparalleled level of delusion in the voter community. With the evidence given, there is no reason to think that this is a pro-democratic alliance. If democracy is lacking within the party, there is nothing democratic about this decision. If all the members of the party are not allowed to participate in the decision-making process, then making such a statement is blatantly lying to the public. Davendra Kissoon
