Dear Editor,
A Partnership for National Unity APNU held a press conference on January 30, 2015 to berate the government for purportedly neglecting the youth of this country. Mr. David Granger: pointed out that “This election will be determined largely by the way young people vote. Youths, those between 15 and 24 years, and dependent children constitute 69 percent of the national population. About seven out of every ten citizens are classified as young.
He goes on to blame the Government for not educating the youth despite statistics that show we have achieved the millennium development goals for primary and secondary education and clear evidence that our youths from all over the country are topping their Caribbean counterparts in passes at the annual exams.
What is more alarming is that he accuses the government of not having a national youth plan even though one has been in place for years and then turns around an expounds on the rate of suicide among youths claiming that our country is suffering from a suicide epidemic.
What takes the cake, however. is his response to the question posed by “Fareeza Haniff for INews: Good morning Mr. Ganger. What is the APNU’s plan to deal with the suicide epidemic if you go into office?
Mr. Granger: Well we don’t have a plan of action to deal with suicide epidemic”
How can we expect our people to elect a leader without a plan after he spent the last hour of a national press conference berating the Government for not having a plan when in fact there is a well-documented National Youth Policy approved by the National Assembly of which he is a part.
We have to hold our leaders to a higher standard of accountability than this if we want to move our country forward. When it is time for you to vote on Election Day will you vote for the candidate without a plan for youths who comprise 69 percent of the population?
In view of his open admission that he has no plan for our youths it will be Mr. Grainger who will reap a bitter harvest at the next elections. Desmond Morian
