Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam) has already recorded five deaths by suicide for this month. There are reports of four other attempted suicides registered at the Suddie Public Hospital.
Those patients hospitalized are said to be in critical conditions. They ingested poisonous substances.
The alarming figure has prompted debate among Essequibians. A Partnership for National Unity councillor, Wazeer Latiff, argues that more religious teaching should be done in schools and teachers. Latiff also believes that poisonous substances should not be sold to young people.
Recently, a 21-year-old miner took his own life. Lima Sea Dam, Essequibo resident, Leroy Cornelius, was discovered by his sister, Tracie Cornelius, in a fowl pen. Reports indicate he was experiencing problems with his friends.
Meanwhile, a former Abram Zuil Secondary School student ended his life after his parents allegedly upbraided him about his behaviour. Earlier, however an 88-year-old Golden Fleece pensioner was discovered hanging from a beam in her bedroom by her sister. The elderly woman apparently became frustrated living away from her relatives who lived overseas.
A father of three was discovered dead aback of his Golden Fleece residence. He too, had ingested a poisonous substance and subsequently died. Moreover just before the New Year, a Devonshire Castle father of two ended his life. He was said to be an alcoholic.
