Dear Editor,
We refer to an article published in your January 4, edition “Sandvoort residents accuse government, GT&T of neglect”, and we thank you for an opportunity to detail the circumstances responsible for the non-functioning of the telephone service of some residents in Sandvoort and to offer our sincere regret to the community for the intermittent service disruption.
Please note that there was major cable damage which resulted from deterioration in the line plant that serves the Sandvoort area. The repairs necessitated major civil works which commenced during the week of December 15, 2014 and were temporary halted since personnel had to be diverted to repair a 600 pair cable damaged in Canje and a vandalized 200 pair cable in Stanleytown, which also serves the GuyoilHeatburn operations.
We have continuously highlighted in our previous media and community engagements that situations like the one in Sandvoort continue because of the almost daily damage and vandalism to our facility resulting in the diversion of our personnel and resources from the scheduled works.
We are happy to advise that repairs recommenced on January 7, and services of 50% of the residents have been restored. We are working to ensure restoration of all services in the community. Allison Parker Public Relations Officer
