Police offer no help to drowning man – La Penitence residents say
Residents of an East La Penitence squatting area say that last evening police failed
The trench were a man supposedly drowned across from La Penitence Police Station
to render assistance to a drowning man.
Kaieteur News understands that Raquel, a nearby resident received a phone call from her niece around 18:30hrs stating that a man was drowning in a trench parallel to their home.
Raquel’s niece said she heard a man yelling “Help, Help!” The young girl said that her mother ran outside and offered a stick to the drowning man but he was unable to reach it in time.
Residents said that they reported the matter to the La Penitence Police Station and a police officer known as ‘Fat Man’ came on the scene.
“De officer come and he seh he can’t do nothing because he can’t swim and the place too dark.”
Another resident told Kaieteur News that he saw the man drowning and would have jumped in but it was too dark to assist the drowning man.
The ‘drowning man’ is described as an older gentleman of East Indian decent and that he resides at the ‘Night Shelter’ across the street from the trench.
The area along the trench, residents say, is used for ‘small farming’. “Me ain’t know wha he de deh doing walking along here but I think he was drunk,” one resident said.
Melinda Lynch, a squatter said, “The police too wicked. I’m not racist or anything but right is right and wrong is wrong and that fat police man does always behave stupid when we call for help. Watch how he just sit down there…laughing and peeping from the station. When he came here, was the same thing. That is anything to laugh about?”
At the La Pentitance Police Station on duty officers were oblivious to any such matter, telling Kaieteur that this was the first that they were hearing about the matter. “So why they ain’t call we? We ain’t went down there. Don’t worry with dem street dangles.”
Sharon Gilkes, an orderly from the La Penitence Night Shelter said that she hadn’t heard anything about the incident. “That’s craziness and I would like to know what really happened.”
The body has still not been recovered and the matter has not yet been reported.
