A young miner from Kamarang, Cuyuni-Mazaruni was granted $75,000 bail for allegedly stealing $130,000 from his employer.
Ryan David appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to respond to a simple larceny charge.
It is alleged that on November 3, last, at Mahdia the defendant stole $130,000 from mining operation owner, Garfield Sam.
David had pleaded guilty to the offence during a previous court appearance, but when he returned yesterday, he changed his plea. He had told the court that he used it to buy clothes and a bag.
David was unrepresented at his first court appearance however, Attorney-At-Law Peter Hugh spoke on his behalf pro bono yesterday afternoon. Hugh told the court that David is 20-years-old and had no previous brushes with the law.
Police Prosecutor Michael Grant said, that $72,000 was recovered and that he had no objections to bail which was subsequently granted. The matter has been transferred to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court for January 12, next year.
