In observance of International Infection Prevention Week which commenced on October 19, the Georgetown Public Hospital’s (GPHC) “Infection Prevention and Control Committee” conducted various activities to educate the public about the importance of infection prevention.
The committee concluded their week of activities on Saturday with a “Health Fair” at the GPHC, which showcased the new advances in technology within the different hospital departments and also provided free medical services to the public.

Some departments that displayed their products and services included the Infection Prevention and Control Committee, the Main Operating Theatre, Pharmacy and Sanitation (maid services).
Blood and hypertension tests, along with vaccines were provided to the public.
Last week, members of GPHC’s Infection Prevention and Control Committee, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO), conducted learning sessions on hand hygiene for students and also distributed hand sanitizers and brochures to them.
GPHC’s Infection Prevention and Control Officers, Thompson Akpotu and Caroline Hicks, along with GPHC’s Secretary for the Quality Improvements Department, Anis Van Doimen, were present to raise hygiene awareness among the students of St. Margaret’s Primary School, Winfer Gardens Primary School and the Georgetown School of Nursing.
According to Hicks, the committee will be continuing the hand hygiene campaigns at selected schools in Georgetown next week.
