UG launches stamps to commemorate 50th Anniversary
The Universityof Guyana (UG) yesterday launched its collection of stamps to

commemorate its 50th Anniversary. The event was hosted on the University’s Turkeyen Campus in the Education Lecture Theatre (ELT), where diplomatic representatives and other dignitaries were in attendance.
The Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds, University of Guyana’s Vice Chancellor, Jacob Opadeyi, Manager of the Guyana Post Office Corporation, Mahadeo Rambharose and Director of the Centre for Communication Studies, Carolyn Walcott, were part of the audience.
Addressing the audience, the Prime Minister reflected on the struggles faced by Guyanese to attain independence, and ultimately establish the University. The University of Guyana was established in April 1963 and assumed operations in October of that year. It has occupied its current Turkeyen location since 1969.
He tied the establishment of the University with Guyana’s independence movement and encouraged students to further advance the goals of progress and development that the movement intended for the country.
In his speech Prime Minister Hinds expressed the hope that the University could expand its academic ambitions to “work with members of the world,” while first and foremost, benefitting the students of its native country. any type of isolation between Guyana and the global community.
The Prime Minister challenged the students of the University to outperform previous generations and utilise, to the fullest extent, the facilities the institution has to offer.
Following the address, the Prime Minister joined the Vice Chancellor in unveiling the official design for the institute’s 50th Anniversary stamp, which comprises pictures of past graduating students and current facilities of the University campus.
Selected attendees also received collections of the framed commemorative postage stamps. One of the University’s earliest graduates and former Administrator of the Secondary School Reformation Project (SSRP), Walter Alexander, received a collection of the framed memorial stamps.
During the launch event, attendees were also able to purchase the stamps for $1000.
