A 45-year-old farmer of Moco Moco Settlement, Rupununi, was sentenced to three years imprisonment on two drug-related charges yesterday.
Ustad Lowe appeared before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to charges of being in possession of narcotics and cultivating marijuana.
According to the police, a search was conducted at Lowe’s home in Moco Moco Settlement, Rupununi on Wednesday (September 24) where they found a transparent plastic bag on his bed frame. When the bag was checked, the illegal substance was found.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Steven Telford explained that the farmer then took the police to his farm which is located about 15 metres to the eastern side of his house where he pointed out about 25 marijuana plants ranging from 3-10 feet in height.
Telford said when ranks questioned the farmer; he admitted that he had been nurturing the plants. Lowe was arrested and taken to the station where the illicit substance was weighed. It amounted to 10 grammes.
He was charged for having it in his possession and cultivating the plants.
Addressing the court, the man, who was unrepresented, explained that he was involved in an accident and had the illegal substance for his personal use.
The Magistrate sentenced him to three years imprisonment on each of the two charges. For the possession of narcotics he was fined $10,000 fine while for the cultivation of the prohibited plants, he was fined $5,000.
The jail terms will run concurrently
