A key figure behind the establishment of the now defunct Guyana National Service has died.
The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), Guyana’s largest opposition party, said that Elvin Mc David, a former Government official, born in Georgetown on the June 10, 1944, died in Jamaica while he was receiving medical attention.
He was educated at St. Mary’s RC School, St. Stanislaus College, University of Birmingham and the University of the West Indies. He died in Jamaica where he was receiving medical attention.
Mc David was a former Political Assistant to Prime Minister, Forbes Burnham; Minister of Information and Culture (1971-72); and Ambassador to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. “He is credited with much of the pioneering work for the hosting of the first Caribbean Festival of the Arts (Carifesta) and the establishment of the Guyana National Service (GNS),” PNCR said in a statement yesterday.
“The PNCR extends its deepest condolences to Mr. Mc David’s children, brother and relatives.”
