Members and supporters of the main political opposition coalition, A Partnership for National Unity, (APNU) are expected to commence a countrywide protest today in pursuit of Local Government Elections.
Speaking with Kaietuer News yesterday APNU’s Public Relation Officer (PRO), Mark Archer, said that the activities are expected to commence at the various municipalities countrywide.
He noted that protest marches will be held at Rose Hall, Linden, Georgetown, New Amsterdam, Corriverton and Anna Regina.
Archer said that the exercise will further highlight the issue and heighten the awareness campaign as the party continues to call on the President to announce a date for Local Government Elections.
The last time Guyana held local government elections was in 1994. Few of the councils that were voted in at the time remain in place while some have been replaced by management committees. Efforts in the past to host the local government polls have proven futile.
On Sunday, party members kicked off the exercise with a candlelight vigil, outside the residences of President Donald Ramotar and Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, making repeated calls for the holding of the long overdue elections.
Last week, Opposition Leader David Granger had announced that the party will be embarking on a campaign of lawful, orderly, peaceful public protests – including picketing, rallies and vigils – to raise public awareness of the threat to our collective rights.
Granger said that President Donald Ramotar and the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPPC) administration have tried every device to derail the legislative process and to delay local government elections, including not assenting to two Local Government Bills that were passed by the National Assembly and declining to issue the ‘Commencement Order’ to operationalise a third.
As such, he called on all Guyanese to join the campaign to challenge the President to hold Local Government Elections without undue delay.”
Granger said that all “good people” must now demand their ‘inalienable’ right to elect the persons they want to represent them in their towns, villages and neighborhoods.
However, regardless of the improbability of an election the party is continuing with other elections campaign activities. The APNU team, recently visited the communities of Laing Avenue, East Ruimveldt and Ann’s Grove, where residents complained the poor drainage and physical infrastructure.
