In order to muzzle Kaieteur News, this newspaper and its publisher have come under sustained attack, not just now, but for years.
Where is the decency in our society when in light of these insidious attacks on this newspaper, civil society and the religious community remain silent on what has been taking place in this country?
Where is the professionalism that is expected of government functionaries when they allow themselves to be manipulated by their political functionaries?
What more does civil society need before it takes a stand on the attacks on this newspaper? Has it not yet seen through the danger that is besetting this country?
What more does it need to see? Does civil society believe that it is mere coincidence that no sooner did this newspaper publish certain revelations that enquiries were made at the bank with which the editor does business transactions? Is that a coincidence?
Does it believe that this is a mere political tit- for tat? Does it not see the far from invisible economic hands that are at work here?
Was it a coincidence that just about the same time that there was a plan to build a brewery at Skeldon that a decision was taken that could have placed in jeopardy the ability of Demerara Distilleries Limited to secure molasses, a raw material needed to make liquor? I leave it up to you to decide.
Was it also a coincidence that no sooner had DDL resisted, through the Courts, the threats to its future access to molasses, its top official, Dr. Yesu Persaud was dressed down in public by a senior government functionary? Was that a coincidence? I leave it up to you to decide.
When advertisements were withdrawn from the Stabroek News there was a pronouncement that ads would be based on circulation. The government in fact went regionally to defend its decision to withhold ads from that newspaper.
But no sooner was the Guyana Times launched that this policy was reversed seemingly with the intention of ensuring that all newspapers would now attract ads regardless of circulation. This qualified the Guyana Times for advertisements. Was this change in policy a coincidence? I leave it to you to decide.
I also leave it to you to decide that not long after men in a vehicle belonging to a government ministry were seen photographing this newspaper’s office that a new wave of attacks were launched against this newspaper. Is this a coincidence?
If civil society believes that it is a coincidence it should remain silent. But if it feels that the actions are connected then it should raise its voice like a thunderstorm.
The National Assembly is about to reconvene. One of the main items of the agenda is the no-confidence motion against the government. The Speaker of the National Assembly has ruled that the motion meets the requirements for it to be placed on the Order Paper and that he would allow a debate on this motion.
Is it coincidental that suddenly someone has emerged making an allegation of sexual misconduct against the said Speaker? Do you think that this is coincidental? I leave it up to you.
I will leave a great many other things to you the readers to decide. But I will say this, if you the readers and civil society continue to remain silent in the face of what is taking place in this country and particularly against this newspaper, then today it is Kaieteur News and tomorrow it will be you. There can be no self- interest served in being silent in the face of the victimization and vindictiveness that is taking place in our society.
There is monster out there that wants to dominate the totality of the economic space in Guyana. They are spreading their tentacles far and wide. Right now they are being selective. But their appetite is open-ended and when they are finished devouring the main sectors of business in Guyana, they will come in search of your little neck.
They can be prevented if decent people speak out. They can be thwarted if professionals refuse to do their ill deeds.
