While the exact origin of the fire remains unknown, speculations indicate that it could have been ignited by a vagrant who was cooking outside the facility.
The General Manager of the Guyana Chronicle, Michael Gordon, said that “there is usually one person, a vagrant, who we have problems with from time to time, and we have to ask security to remove him, but to say he ignited the fire would be a speculation, and I don’t want to speculate.”
The Guyana Chronicle’s Board Room located on the upper flat of the Sports Club building was also damaged by the fire. The extent of the board room’s damage is yet to be confirmed.
The Editor-in Chief of the Guyana Chronicle, Mark Ramotar, said that the building was rented to Pavnik Press for the last 10 years. He added that the company suffered a large loss of supplies and equipment including paper, ink, chemicals and other printing equipment.
Kaieteur News understands that the proprietor of Pavnik Press, Johnny Kowlessar, is currently overseas and could not be reached for a comment.
The firefighter said that the fire service was alerted around 11:00 hours and they immediately responded with four fire tenders.
He said that the fire was quickly contained, although much difficulty was encountered by fire-fighters due to the large amount of combustible materials that were set ablaze.
