Dear Editor,
I was a bit surprised when the Guyana Revenue Authority initiated action against two re-migrants who have close relationships with the Publisher of the Kaieteur News, Glenn Lall. The issue was the importation of two 2014 Lexus sport utility vehicles, under the duty free scheme.
What surprised me though, was that the action taken by the GRA against the friends of Glenn Lall occurred a few days after the Kaieteur News raised questions about the duty free facility granted to the Chinese company Bai Shan Lin to import similar SUVs into Guyana, and a few weeks after the newspaper exposed the nepotism at the GRA. If something here does not stink of vindictiveness then the word does not exist.
I am in no way trying to defend the friends of Glenn Lall, but I would hope that the GRA through its “incorruptible” commissioner general Khurshid Sattaur will pursue with the same vigour, those persons who have abused the duty free system.
One might not be surprised to learn that some of the abusers are friends of the big ones at GRA.
Now is a good time, Mr. Sattaur, to show that you are not Guyana’s version of J. Edgar Hoover, who was famous for using blackmail to intimidate citizens who opposed him. Jagdeo Sathrohan
