Adbussulum Azimulla, the man who is alleged to have started the fracas that caused the upheaval in the New Amsterdam Prison on Friday May 23, last, has been charged with felonious wounding. During the fracas he and three other prisoners ended up being seriously wounded.
The accused Adbussulum Azimulla, called “Sato”, 31 of Lot 183 Hampshire, Corentyne, Berbice, is on remand on a charge of 2004 murder. He is also charged with two counts of robbery under arms, which was committed while he was armed with an AK 47 rifle.
He was on the run for more than eight years. He was subsequently charged with the capital offence and remanded to jail.
On Tuesday he appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Sisters Magistrate’s court on a charge of felonious wounding.
According to Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter, the victim, Kevin James called ‘Onday’ 35, of Edinburgh, East Bank Berbice, was attacked and beaten by Adbussulum Azimulla and others. James was remanded on a charge of break and enter and larceny
He had reported that around 13:00 hrs on the day in question, he and other prisoners were in the prison yard. He was sitting on a table when he was struck across his head. He managed to turn around and saw Azimulla , Jamal Munroe, called ‘Oakley’ and Toney Samaroo, called Scare Them . The men were armed with jukkers, about one foot long. James was beaten in his head and about his body. He was rescued and taken to the New Amsterdam Hospital where he was treated and sent away.
That attack is widely believed to have caused the ensuing prison fracas in which Azimulla, and other high profile prisoners Quammy Bhagwandin, Clarence Williams, called ‘Wild Hog’, and Davendra Harrichand, called ‘Bara’ were subsequently injured.
The matter has been transferred to the New Amsterdam Magistrate court and set for September 30.
