A man and his wife were taken into custody on Sunday after the lifeless body of their drinking partner was found with a
stab wound to his heart at the back of their Lot 355 South Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara (ECD)’s home.
Dead is 37-year-old Bharrat Sugrim, a father of one, of Lot 285 Better Hope North, East Coast Demerara. Sugrim, a fisherman, was pronounced dead at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
According to information received, the couple got into a heated argument which eventually led to a fight sometime around 16:30 hrs on Sunday.
Sugrim, who tried to calm the couple down, was allegedly stabbed to his heart. It is unclear who stabbed him.
Police sources told this newspaper that the detained couple claimed, that the 37-year-old man went to use an outhouse and when he didn’t return, they went to investigate.
They reportedly told ranks that they found Sugrim lying lifeless. However, police allegedly observed that both suspects had minor injuries and a knife believed to be the murder weapon, was found in the yard.
Yesterday, when Kaieteur News visited the area, the couple’s neighbours claimed that they consume alcohol daily and would usually attack each other.
“This is normal. They drink, dance and cuss up each other. They are not living a nice life at all. Every day, the two of them are drunk. The husband does security work when he feels like and the wife does domestic work,” one neighbour said.
The neighbour said that she was watching television when she heard a loud noise but did not pay much attention, since this is common occurrence. “I just ignored them because when you watch over there, the man does cuss you up.”
The neighbour said that several hours after she heard a loud commotion, she noticed the police
in the couple’s yard with persons crying and shouting, “Oow you kill my brother, you kill he.”
Another neighbour said that she heard someone groaning in the couple’s outhouse, and then she heard one of the suspects crying and after sometime she saw the police arrive.
The mother of the detained man told Kaieteur News that she was told that her son and his wife were fighting and Sugrim, who tried to separate them, was stabbed.
She further explained that based on what she was told, the dead man was attacked in the couple’s verandah, but collapsed near the outhouse, after going there to relieve himself.
“My son’s wife drinks a lot every day. They have two children together and I take care of them. If the children have money she would take it away and buy rum. She stabbed my son countless times and he still won’t leave her,” the woman said.
Meanwhile, the dead man’s father, Sugrim (only name given) said that his son left home since Saturday morning but never returned.
“I get a call on Sunday from someone who informed me that my son was killed, but I did not believe until I went there and see for myself,” the older Sugrim said.
He added that his son is a peaceful person and his only bad habit is consuming alcohol.
