Leroy Hopkinson, 28, of Stanleytown, a labourer attached to the Mayor and Town Council of New Amsterdam, was on Tuesday remanded to jail by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus when he appeared before her at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on a charge of robbery.
Hopkinson is accused of robbing Barbara Ramdeo, 51, a resident of Locaber Village, West Canje Berbice, last Sunday, of $37,000 which represented a ‘box hand’ for the week.
According to reports, the woman had just collected the money from a number of persons and was on her way home when she was accosted by the accused in a lonely area in the vicinity of the Regional Administration Building, and robbed.
Her screams attracted persons in the vicinity who responded to her plea for help and saw the accused attempting to escape. He was pursued and in an attempt to escape he jumped into a trench. He was pulled from the trench and given a sound thrashing before he was ‘saved’ by the police who responded promptly. The money was allegedly found in the man’s pocket.
Hopkinson pleaded not guilty and will make his next appearance on September 5.
