Photo in courtroom lands woman before city Magistrate
A woman who took a photograph on her mobile phone in a courtroom has been fined after she admitted to disobeying the courthouse laws.
Paulette Luke was arrested and kept in custody for about two hours for using her cellular phone to snap a photo in Magistrate Fabayo Azore’s courtroom at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
A police officer noticed her taking the picture while court was in session and took her into custody. The phone was seized and examined before a charge for violating the law that disallows photographs being taken in court, was laid against her.
She later appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan and pleaded guilty to the charge. She said that she saw the sign which bans patrons from leaving their cellular phones “on” while court is in session.
The woman admitted that she disobeyed it and simply “turned her phone down.” She said “I’m using this time to apologise to you and the Court, Your Worship. I’m asking for you to be lenient because I am in no financial position to deal with the sanction.
Luke was admonished by Magistrate McLennan who said that it was a societal norm for persons to be disobedient. “You admit that you saw the sign and blatantly ignored it. You blatantly disobeyed the law,” she stressed.
Magistrate McLennan fined Luke $15,000 with an alternative of four weeks in jail.
