The Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) said it has been able to repower the Essequibo Coast, Region Two, after a total shutdown Wednesday night.
The power company explained that on Wednesday, at around19:30 hrs, the No.1 Wartsila engine at Essequibo was removed from service as a result of a fault in the automatic voltage control circuitry.
“The resulting shortage in capacity led to several communities in Essequibo being without electricity while troubleshooting and repairs were being carried out. With only the Wartsila No. 2 engine in service, customers in the north stretching from Anna Regina to Charity and in the south from Anna Regina to Supenaam, was supplied with electricity alternatively every four hours.”
GPL said that around 15:30hrs Thursday, output from this unit was unavailable due to failure of a component within its main circuit breaker.
“Both units were unavailable until 20:00 hours when the circuit breaker of the No. 2 engine was replaced and power restored incrementally. Meanwhile, repairs to the No. 1 unit were also completed and full restoration of power was accomplished at 01:00hrs.”
GPL has already announced that next year a new Wartsilla engine is in the pipeline for the Essequibo coast.
The process to procure a contractor is underway.
A mechanic at Taymouth Manor said that the constant spate of blackouts is proving to be an expensive problem and he is forced to use a generator. He said he loses in his business especially whenever he fails to deliver to his customers on time.
Francis Darchiville, another resident of Somerset and Berks, said he understands the problems of GPL and believes it would be better if the company explains the problem to Essequibians instead of hiding it.
He stressed that the situation is frustrating, since he was forced to purchase a generator to take care of his perishable items and to get work done in his household.
