Labourer charged with murder of elderly North R/veldt woman
A labourer accused of murdering an elderly woman in her North Ruimveldt home more than five months ago, was remanded to prison yesterday.
Junior Williams also known as Kevin Alfred, 23, is charged with the murder of 75-year-old Joyce Lewis who was found partially nude and bound in the bedroom of her two-storey house around 08:30 hours on March 26, last, by a relative.

Williams of Second Street Crane, West Coast of Demerara, was not called upon to respond to the charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Police Prosecutor, Inspector Michael Grant, requested a date for the commencement of the Preliminary Inquiry (PI) since the investigations have been completed.
Williams was unrepresented by legal counsel and he was told to return to court on September 23 for the pretrial hearing. No details of the allegation were outlined in court.
Earlier reports indicated that Lewis had been living alone at her Christiani Street, North Ruimveldt home since her husband, a former Police Inspector, passed away three years ago.
On the morning of March 26, last, a relative had ventured to Lewis’s house after she failed to answer several calls made to both her cellular and landline phones. It was then that her body was discovered.
According to reports, there were marks on the neck which suggested that she had been strangled. Her underwear was partially removed and her home was ransacked.
It was believed that the perpetrators had gained entry into Lewis’ home by climbing through a bay window near the verandah. Police had confirmed that they found a “fresh” footprint on the window ledge.
Crime scene detectives had found a large knife wrapped in a rag, in Mrs. Lewis’s front yard.
It was five months after she was killed that the police were able to charge Williams. Reports are that Williams’s fingerprints were among several that investigators found in the slain woman’s house.
Police had arrested him two Wednesdays ago while he was gambling in East Ruimveldt. They also seized an unlicenced gun from the suspect. He has since made an appearance before city Magistrate Ann McLennan, on Monday, to face a charge for the unlicenced weapon.
Williams was remanded to prison and is set to face Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on October 13 on account of that charge.
