Dear Editor,
The world is now more and more being engulfed in violence at all levels, and we can envisage no end to this in the foreseeable future. On the international scene, we are now witnessing the most inhumane acts between people of opposing countries, mostly with the excuse of defending their territorial dignity or the safety of their citizens. There are also those who are standing on the sidelines and imposing sanctions and other measures with the excuse of trying to maintain justice, when we all know that they are really working for the narrow interests of their own people.
The fact is that violence, injustice, hunger and suffering will always prevail on this earth as long as we human beings continue to act from the position of prejudice of the various kinds – gender, race, religion, lineage and community. Add to this the more easily acceptable one of nationality.
The nature of human beings is that we have been created to search and find ways in which we can break down all the barriers that separate us at these various levels, and truly love and seek to help one another. That is maybe the very reason we have been cast together on this planet, as this is the way to our own salvation, now and in the hereafter.
Just as in our personal lives we find that we have to forget our differences and truly think of the good of our spouses, relatives, community members and compatriots, we are faced with the challenge of doing the same for all other human beings, in whatever region or country, or we are doomed to the same seemingly endless conflict and suffering.
It is time we Guyanese realise this in our own sphere, and do our part by forgetting our own selfish interests and working within the situations in which we operate towards real peace and love among our citizens. Roy Paul
