By now the four combatants left standing in the 4th Annual Digicel Schools Football Competition have completed preparations and just rearing to get on the field of play to battle for the right to claim the ultimate prize.
The four schools left standing in this year’s competition are defending champions Christianburg / Wismar (CWSS) who will face Bush Lot on their home turf at the Burnham Park in New Amsterdam and last year’s beaten finalist Waramadong who goes up against Beterverwagting Secondary, at the BV Community Centre ground.
The CWSS versus Bush Lot should be a riveting contest, but the champs must start as favourites to make it to the final. Apart from a being given a stern examination from stable mate Mackenzie High School, CWSS has looked in control ever since, easing to some very lopsided victories against their opponents and many experts are of the opinion that they will complete the three-peat this year.
Strikers Shane Luckie and Donovan Francis have been in scintillating form, while the silky skills of Ezra Ashby have been a thorn in the flesh of opposing defenders. Bush Lot on the other hand should not be underestimated and so far teams that were touted to beat them have had to learn their lessons the hard way.
Port Kaituma, who beat the highly rated Santa Rosa team exited the competition compliments of a loss to them, while another team from the hinterland Annai also fell victim to them so counting them out could prove to be a risky choice.
Marlon Nicholson, who netted a double in the previous game and Adrian Pryce are both solid players capable of turning a game on its head. In the other affair, Waramadong are the clear favourite to make it to the championship stage and this billing must have been heightened after their impressive performance against Leonora who they beat 4-0.
Myles Albert is a class above the rest and their chances rest squarely on his shoulders, while Ashton Ward and Reyon Naughton will have to continue their support in search of goals.
BV has made it this far in a rather low keyed fashion, managing to keep under the radar in terms of high expectations, but their win over St. George’s have now catapulted them into focus so Wramadong should be careful not to take them lightly.
Paul Kingston was the player who placed the dagger in St. George’s and they will once again be relying on him to get past their opponents. In effect, both semi-finals should be scorching affairs as predicted.
