Teenage bandit remanded for GuySuCo field foreman’s murder
Residents in Berbice are showering praise on the Commander, Assistant Commissioner Brian Joseph and his investigators, in the division for their diligent and efficient method in which they were able to investigate and solve a murder which occurred a few days ago.
A teen has since been arrested and charged with the capital offence.
The teenager Vishal Michael Edwards, called “Uncle Roy”, 19, of No 77 Village Housing Scheme and of Lot 450, Church Street No78 Village, Corriverton Berbice, appeared on Monday before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Magistrate’s Court. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge of murder.
He is accused of between July 14 and July15, last, at No 78 Village Corriverton murdered Ravindranauth Tirkha, 53, called ‘Engine,’ a field foreman of the Skeldon Estate and of Lot 498 Block 16 Line Path, Corentyne.
The suspect, a labourer, is said to have colluded with a sex worker to lure Tirkha to the area where they robbed and strangled him.
The police had interviewed a number of persons. Their interrogation led them to a bar at which the now dead field foreman was drinking. The bartender had indicated that she had indeed spoken to the man, and that he had solicited a known sex worker, with whom he left.
It was later learnt by investigators that the murder accused who lived at the same address with the sex worker, hatched a plan with the sex worker to lure Tirkha to the Springlands boat landing and relieve him of his valuables.
On reaching the area, the teen allegedly robbed and strangled his victim. Tirkha, was found some time around 05:30 hrs last Tuesday lying face-down near a popular ‘backtrack’ route, with blood oozing from his nostrils.
His money, a gold band worth $200,000, his identification card and Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card were missing.
Tirkha’s wife, Mala, had stated that he had left home around 18:30 hrs to go to a function at the Estate. After he failed to return home by 19:00 hrs as promised, she made several calls to his phone, but got no response.
His lifeless body was subsequently found the following morning.
According to reports, during interrogation by investigators, the teen confessed to killing the man and stealing his personal items.
The matter has been transferred to the Springlands Magistrate’s court for a hearing on August 8, next. He was unrepresented.
