The programme started with 125 students between the ages of six to sixteen and will last for six weeks during which participants will be taught the basics of the sport including breathing control, kicking, arm movement and formation of strokes. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Minister Dr. Frank Anthony urged the parents to ensure that the youngsters attend all the sessions. He stated that the government is trying to develop swimming in Guyana, citing the National Aquatic Centre (NAC) as a major investment.
He explained that this programme is designed to spot talent but informed that there is a shortage of life guards and they are currently looking at persons to assist in this field. The minister also said that he wants to see students graduate to the NAC.
Director of Sport Neil Kumar indicated that this is one of the eleven camps they will be hosting during the school holidays and urged students to make full use of them. He advised the youths to take their education seriously and strive for greater heights.
Meanwhile, in an invited comment President of the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA) Ivan Persaud said he is impressed with the attendance and thanked the government for their support. He added that they are happy to have Cuban Coach Isabel Maria Cousa Fals involved and she will make direct recommendations to the GASA. He said that participants will be encouraged to join clubs where they can further develop their skills acquired after the programme.
