Mercury Education and Awareness Project in Region Five. The project seeks to “stimulate community action on environment issues, specifically the use and effects of mercury by increasing awareness and building capacity of people to reduce pollution.”
The $3.2 M project will be implemented with $1.3million coming by way of support from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Guianas.
Additional finances will be sourced from an existing project funded by the Global Environment Facility – Small Grants Programme executed by the United Nations Development Programme.
The main components of the project are a public education campaign using mass media and training of Artisan and Small Gold Miners (ASGM) and jewelers on the effects of mercury on humans and the environment. In addition to miners and jewelers the project seeks to inform a wider audience about these effects. GYM-G believes that with community actions there can be national and global impacts.
