country’s waterways with a team visiting the Mahaicony Creek area on Wednesday.
A team of officers from the Maritime Administration Department (MARAD), along with Region Five Chairman, Bindrabhan Bisnauth, were among those that visited.
Among some of the issues discussed with boat operators were the importance of having their vessels inspected and certified, “and for the operators themselves to be examined and certified,” MARAD said yesterday.
This visit was initiated by Minister of Public Works, Robeson Benn, after complaints were made about the poor conditions of boats in the area.
MARAD said that it is no secret that residents in riverain areas, including the Mahaicony Creek, depend heavily on marine transportation.
“However, most of the boat operators are unlicensed.”
Meanwhile as part of the efforts to promote safety on the waterways, 74 life jackets for children were distributed to schools in the area. These include Gordon Table Nursery and Primary Schools, Karamat Primary School and Mora Point Nursery School.
At the Gordon Table school, Laurain McLennon, a teacher, received a donation of 25 life jackets while Head Teacher of the Karamat Primary School, Lalto Paul, expressed gratitude for 33.
According to MARAD, similar sentiments were also expressed by the Head Teacher of the Mora Point Nursery School, Bindoo Inshan, after she collected16 of the jackets.
There has been a rash of deadly river accidents, especially in the Essequibo waterways in recent years which left several dead. Carelessness has been a major cause with several cases of safety issues found.
