Former West Indies wicketkeeper-batsman Guyanese Ivor Leon Mendonca died yesterday. He suffered
cancer of the Larynx and Prostrate. Mendonca was born on July 13, 1934 in Bartica, Essequibo and also represented British Guiana. The right handed batsman was a talented cricketer and appeared in two test matches and had the misfortune to be at his peak at a time when the was no vacancy in the regional squad. He got his chance after Jackie Hendricks got injured against India in the 1961-62 series. In his debut at Kingston, he scored 78 adding 127 for the seventh wicket with Gary Sobers and 74 for the eighth wicket with Charlie Stayers, and took four catches and a stumping. He averaged 40.50.
He lost his place to David Allan in the third test; won it back in the fourth in which he effected five dismissals and was replaced by Allan for the fifth.
Mendonca played 10 first class games and amassed 407 runs including three half centuries with a highest score of 78 at an average of 31.30. His first class career spanned from 1958 -1962. He was born to Ineas Mendonca and Osmond Mendonca and was the oldest of 10 brothers and sisters. He was the uncle of English Footballer Clive Mendonca.
Meanwhile, the President, Members and Executive Committee of the Guyana Cricket Board have expressed condolences to his family. A release from the board stated that Ivor was a quiet and unassuming individual and served the game of cricket ardently. He was always willing to share his knowledge and experience of his cricketing career and exploits with any eager listener and spent most of his final years with the Georgetown Cricket Club until his ailments. Just a few years prior to his death, Ivor could be seen coaching the youngsters at the Club.
Secretary of the GCB Anand Sanasie in an invited comment said that even though they were all aware that Ivor was ill for some time, his death still creates that vacuum we experience when someone beloved departs.
