Saturday May 24 next, a team of boxers out of the Essequibo, the Forgotten Youth Foundation and Harpy Eagles boxing gyms will venture into region 8 when organizers from that region collaborate with the GBA for a one night amateur boxing card dubbed ‘Independence Boxing Showdown’ at Vidya’s Courtyard Mahdia.
The media was summoned to the Main Street office of President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle where one of the organizers, Mark Young disclosed that the idea was hatched to support the wider agenda of the GBA. He said that the organizers are also contemplating the formation of a boxing gym in Mahdia and this initiative is the first step towards this objective. He said funds accrued from the card will support the formation of the gym.
Mr. Young said that he is indebted to Minister of the Tourism (ag), Irfaan Ali, who has promptly acquiesced to support the programme. He also disclosed that the card received supported from Cell Phone Shack, whose proprietor has donated one cell phone for the most promising boxer on show, and Trophy Stall, for the input of trophies and medals.
Mr. Ninvalle lauded the efforts of the organizers saying that the initiative merged with the projection of his executives to decentralize the sport from along the coast. He further said that the Mahdia initiative is historical and revealed that his executive will next take the sport to Buxton this monthend where several boxers out of St Lucia might be on show.
GBA Vice President, Eustace Cuffy echoed the sentiments of his President and reiterated that the GBA’s intention is to popularize the sport by taking it to the many communities countrywide. GBA Tournament Director, Terrence Poole, was enthused by the initiative and also lauded the organizers for their interest in the development of boxing. He said that based on the compilation of the boxers travelling to the interior community, fans could brace themselves for a night of fistic fury. In total, eleven boxers from the aforementioned gyms will travel to Mahdia for the one night of solid fistic entertainment.
