A traffic cop is under close arrest for his involvement in an accident which resulted in the death of 62 year- old pedal cyclist Chandrapaul called ‘Baba’, on the Bee Hive Public Road, East Coast Demerara yesterday morning.
Chandrapaul of 25 Middlewalk, Bee Hive, was killed on the spot after he was struck down by a speeding private car that was driven by the young police Constable around 06:30 hours.
Both men were on their way to work when the accident occurred and Chandrapaul’s death has pushed the country’s road fatality figure to 43.
While the policeman has given a statement in which he claimed that Chandrapaul rode into the path of his vehicle as he attempted to turn back from the direction he was heading, some relatives of the dead man indicated that Chandrapaul was struck from behind while riding in the corner of the road.
Police say that they have already obtained a statement from an eyewitness who claimed that the elderly man attempted to turn back after someone called out to him and he was struck down by the oncoming car.
Anita Chandrapaul, the dead man’s wife said that her husband left for work, which involves the clearing of trenches primarily on the East Coast, shortly after six o’clock yesterday.
She said that since he was not too sure where his workmates were, he was riding around looking for them.
“Like a police thing (car) coming with a speed and like he hit he,” the woman said.
At the time of the accident she was at home.
“One ah he nephew come and call me and he tell me dat me husband get knock down and deh lay down deh,” Mrs. Chandrapaul said.
She said that she contacted other relatives and together they went to the scene where they saw Chandrapaul lying dead on the road.
His nephew Rohan Ramlagan said that when he arrived at the scene he saw his uncle lying on the road while the car that had struck him down was parked on the opposite side.
“Me see de driver, de policeman and me ask he who knock dis man and he say is he. He tell me dat de man turn in front ah he, but is he who come from behind and knock de man,” Ramlagan said.
It is the second fatal accident on the East Coast of Demerara for the week following the one which resulted in the death of 68 year -old security guard Vernon Gordon at Haslington.
Apart from his wife, Chandrapaul leaves to mourn eight children and several grandchildren.
