375 metres of sea and river defences to undergo construction

The Ministry of Public Works has advertised for contractors to bid for the construction of rip-rap sea defences at Crane, Region Three and river defences at Glasgow/ Heatburn, Region Six.

In an advertisement placed in yesterday’s Chronicle, the Ministry said bidding will be conducted through the National Competitive Bidding procedures, specified in the Procurement Act 2003. The contractor bidding for the projects should have undertaken at least one job of similar size and scope within the last three years for the respective project.
Interested eligible bidders may obtain further information from the Chief Sea and Defence Officer, Work Services Group from April 10 to April 29, 2014.
It was noted that bids shall be accompanied by a bid security of: $750,000 for the construction of 125 metres of rip-rap sea defences at Crane; and $2,000,000 for the construction of 250 metres of rip-rap river defences at Glasgow/ Heatburn.
The bid security is usually one to two percent of the total cost of the project. The Ministry of Public Works reserves the right to accept or reject any or all bids without assigning reason(s) for such rejection. There is the likelihood that the contracts would be awarded by May.
Currently, the Ministry is executing five sea and river defences projects. These contracts were signed in late December 2013 and are expected to conclude by July. The 18 odd projects that were rolled over from 2013 to 2014 have already been completed.
Like most ongoing infrastructural projects, the shortage of aggregates and boulders has caused delays in their completion. However, with D’Urban Quarries purchasing a pontoon and BK Quarries purchasing a mobile operation machine it is anticipated that there would be more aggregates and boulders available.
