Dear Editor,
Respect, tolerance and concern for other people’s property are just a few of the civic tenets which were taught in public schools in the days when social order existed in Guyana prior to the 1970s.
Having pursued these “skills for daily living,” it now cuts against one’s grain when disrespect, intolerance and unconcern become evident at all levels in these times of social disorder. Members of St Agnes Church in Grove, East Bank Demerara, have been enduring gross disrespect for months from an auto repair business opposite their place of worship.
Old, derelict vehicles and sundry parts are heaped on the parapet of the very entrance to and along the fence of the Church’s property. (See photograph) Several pleas were made to have the situation corrected. Complaints have been made by the parish priest and members of the congregation to both the operator of the business, the NDC and community officials but the insult remains in place. It was also ascertained that the operator of the business has connections to a senior law enforcement official and so has therefore ignored the pleas and requests to correct the situation.
A check in the wider community revealed that no such illegal encumbrance exists in or near the premises of any Mosque, Mandir or Temple.
