Joel Ferrier, who was initially indicted for the murder of 20-year-old Alberttown resident Sulé Brian Assanah, on October 7, 2012, has been sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment.
Ferrier was sentenced by Justice Navindra Singh after he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter at the High Court yesterday.
According to the details of the case, Ferrier, 47, had stabbed the victim, in the presence of a police officer at the corner of Fourth and Light Streets, Alberttown after he came to the assistance of the said officer.
The officer was in the process of arresting Ferrier for threatening to kill his female acquaintance, Natasha Dhanraj. Ferrier and the woman had reportedly shared a relationship for six months prior to the incident.
On the night of the murder, the woman had made a report to the Alberttown Police Station. The police officer was in the process of apprehending the suspect when he was seen on bicycle, by Assanah, brandishing a knife. After stabbing the victim, Ferrier fled the scene and was arrested days later in the compound of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission, as he was attempting to obtain documents to go into the interior.
A medical report indicated that the 20-year-old man died as a result hemorrhage due to a single stab wound to the neck.
