Dear Editor,
On a day that is generally meant to celebrate, appreciate, respect and show love towards women, International Women’s Day, I was assaulted by a police Officer (name given), attached to the Providence Police Station in the presence of my two children who will forever be traumatized by one heartless police.
On my way to work I had a little fender bender. Upon reaching the Providence Police Station to lodge my complain, I waited more than 20 minutes while three Traffic Officers on duty at the time made no attempt to take my report. Finally I asked if someone would take my report, since I was waiting with my two children and had to go to work. The Officer in question said he had to mop the office which he proceeded to do at midday, having me wait an additional 8 minutes.
When he was good and ready, he asked for my vehicle documents which he handed to another officer while he asked my name. I asked if it was necessary to have me waiting so long? At which point I think I pissed off another Officer (name given) who asked the first officer if I was obstructing the flow of traffic at the time of the accident. He suggested that the first Officer should charge me for obstruction and to tell me I have to lodge my vehicle while they investigate the incident.
The first Officer and I proceeded outside into the Providence compound where I was instructed to park as he inspected the damages on my car. He told me I have to lodge my car and hand over the keys.
At that point I refused, demanding a reasonable explanation why the police needed to keep my car and keys. I went back into the station followed by the first Officer and I sat on the bench.
He further told me when I was ready to hand over my keys, I should tell him, and again I refused unless he could say why I should. I proceeded to make a call to family informing them of what was happening and where I was.
The first Officer then grabbed me by my arm, pulled me up from the bench, dragging me more the 10 feet while ringing my hand to take away my personal phone, then chucking me to sit on the station bench like a common criminal IN THE PRESENCE TO MY TWO CRYING CHILDREN, who couldn’t understand why ‘mommy’ was being abused by a Police whose job is to PROTECT US.
I have since made a report asking the police to file charges against the Officer and obtained a Police medical which stated the lacerations on my wrist and trauma wound to my leg.
My country is becoming more lawless every day.
