Dear Editor,
The debates in our country, region and the world resemble quite a bit of the debates that were taking place in 1938, just on the eve of the Second World War.
At that time the main issue was how to deal with Hitler’s Germany which was displaying a very aggressive and expansionist policy. He was making bold moves in Europe, taking over Austria and in Africa. The powers that be then took a very conciliating approach to him, speaking softly and quietly hoping to dissuade him from going to war.
The Soviet Union had a different view. It was trying to forge an Anti-Hitler front in the 1930s with the United Kingdom and France. It had argued that if not stopped quickly Hitler was going to go to war. The Soviet argument was rejected.
Hitler sensing the reluctancy of the powers, UK and France, in particular, to stop him and noting that the rising power, the United States adopted a neutral position, felt emboldened. In 1938 Hitler invaded Czechoslovakia, which soon after led to the invasion of France and most of Europe and then the Soviet Union, when the war started.
Today we see many similarities to the aggression of the United States and by extension Israel, coming from various quarters.
Many feel that to save themselves from the US frowning on them and to avoid sanctions they must sacrifice Cuba. More than that they attack Iran, the victim of US and Israeli aggression, for defending it-self from the blatant attacks. They have hardly uttered a word of support for the people of Palestine and Lebanon that are being carpet bombed and the blatant murder of babies, children and women, journalist, medical personnel and civilians by Israel whose aim is to expand its territory. The deafening silence by so many is directly related to the support that Israel enjoys from the United States.
It was sad to see that some “democrats” supporting the US actions in Venezuela. One letter writer, Mr. Hydar Ally published a piece in three daily newspaper (and continuing for an entire week in the Guyana Chronicle, as at 23 march), and described the kidnapping of the Venezuelan President and his wife from their bed as an “extradition”.
No doubt it is that kind of “support” that has emboldened the US and Israel to murder thousands of Iranians including many of its leaders. Now we are endangering the whole world since the situation in the Middle East can easily develop into a world war!
Already hints of Israel and US using nuclear weapons against Iran have emerged.
The real friends of the United States will tell them that their policy is creating unbelievable sufferings. What miseries are being created in our world. This is nurturing great hatred and distrust that can last long into the future. We must condemn these unnecessary wars.
We must stand-up for International laws and for principles that have been laid down in the United Nations for decades. The Right of Nations to Self-Determination is a fundamental right and should be upheld and respected! Life has taught us that any change of government must come from the peoples of a country. It cannot be imposed from outside. I consider myself a friend of the great people of the United States and therefore urge that nation to use their enormous power for good, for life and not for death and sufferings!
Sincerely,
Ramesh Ramkirat
