Power team encamped for national duties
January is quickly winding down and the executives of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) are getting ready to commence a hectic itinerary starting from next month when local boxers will square off with their Caribbean counterparts from Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica in a Tri-Nation championship administrators say is geared to get the pugilists in shape for a year of stiff international encounters.
The Tri-Nation tournament will be contested between February 14-16 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) and the GBA has called up a team of the country’s best boxers to commence training on the national team.
Tournament Director, Terrence Poole said that the boxers will remain encamped even after this tournament concludes, in preparation of several other overseas engagements. These include the South American Games in March and the Youth World Championships slated for Bulgaria in April 10-25 among others.
Poole will be assisted by Cuban Coach, Francisco Roldon, recently graduated Coach, Sebert Blake, who completed three months of diligent studies at the Semmelweis University, Faculty of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Strategic and International Directorate in Budapest Hungary and National coach, Wensel Thomas.
The boxers selected are asked to convene at the National Park at 05:00hrs tomorrow morning to commence road work exercises. They will also train in the afternoons at the Andrew Lewis Boxing Gym from 16:00hrs.
Those called up for national duties are Dennis Thomas, Imran Khan (Police) Clairmonte Gibson, Eon Bancroft, Bert Braithwaite, Dennis Amsterdam, Trevon King, Ron Smith, Omar Charles, Mark Marshall, Mark Pierre and female boxer Dwon Thomson (GDF), FYF representatives include, female pugilist Theresa London, Stephen Chan, Septon Barton, Junior Henry and Diwani Lampkin.
Harpy Eagles representatives include Stephan Gouveia and Orin Bancroft while Republican boxers are Stephon Nedd, Anandram Dharamraj and Jason Barker. Two youth boxers from the Tiger Eye Boxing Gym, Travis Fraser and Michael April will complete the squad.
