Donald Pitman, a 21-year-old miner, will spend the next year behind the unwelcoming walls of prison after he was convicted by Magistrate Judy Latchman for smoking weed.’
Yesterday at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, Pitman pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on November 22, at DaSilva Street, Newtown Kitty, he was smoking cannabis.
Pitman was caught by the police smoking the illicit substance at the back of his yard at about 10:30hrs when, acting on information received, the police went into the yard to search for narcotics.
Police Prosecutor Lance Corporal Renetta Bentham told the court that the man admitted to habitually smoking cannabis after he was cautioned by the officer. He was subsequently arrested and charged.
Magistrate Judy Latchman then told the man that for this offence the law permits a fine of $3000 to $5000 as well as a prison sentence. She thereafter fined him $3000 and sentenced him to one year imprisonment.
