Debra Scott, 49, a security guard and a single mother of seven, of Speculation, East Canje, Berbice, and Lakeram Baichan, 41, a father of two and a cane cutter of Adelphi Village, East Canje, Berbice, were on Wednesday remanded to jail by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus when they appeared before her on a joint charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
According to reports the police stopped hire car HB 8259 at Sheet Anchor, East Canje, Berbice and it observed that Baichan, the number two accused, handing over a bulky parcel to Debra Scott. The woman then quickly hid the parcel in her crotch.
She was confronted by the police and she retrieved the parcel from her underwear and handed it over to the police.
The parcel contained a transparent plastic bag and when checked, contained what appeared to be leaves, seeds and stems of the marijuana plant. The contents were weighed and tested and found to be 21 grams of the prohibited plant.
Attorney-at-law Charrandass Persaud, who made an appearance for the two, asked that bail be granted since they are both sole providers of their families. Prosecutor Sergeant Phillip Sheriff asked that bail be refused, citing the quantity of the drugs found.Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus then remanded the two to jail after ruling that no special circumstances were put forward for the granting of bail.
They will have to return to jail on December 16, at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court.
