Central New Amsterdam emerged winners of the Hilbert ‘Old Beef’ Humphrey Memorial Inter-Ward U-15 football tournament which was played last Saturday at the Scott Church ground. The tournament, which was organised by the Hearts of Oak Masters Football club, was played on a round robin basis. Four teams participated with the three New Amsterdam wards in North, Central and South and East Canje turning up to play.
Due to the defunct nature of the Berbice Football Association (BFA), the tournament, which was played in memory of the former stalwart and sportsman, was also organised in an effort to ensure that youths in the New Amsterdam/Canje area get an opportunity to play football on a competitive basis.
In the opening match of the day East Canje needled North New Amsterdam 1-0 through a Shamar Arendell strike. In the second game, Central and North New Amsterdam then played to a 0-0 draw. There was a 1-0 victory for North New Amsterdam over their South counterparts with Godfrey Howard the goal scorer.
The next game saw J-Que Simpson scored for Central New Amsterdam in their 1-0 win over East Canje. Simpson was again on target in another 1-0 victory for Central this time against North New Amsterdam.
In the game which decided the runner up spot, South N/A grabbed hold of the opportunity as they got the better of East Canje 1-0 to take second place through a Joshua Butts strike.
At the presentation ceremony Central received the Hilbert ‘Old Beef’ trophy and fifteen gold medals while second place, South New Amsterdam received a trophy and fifteen silver medals.
In the award for individual performances the players of Central New Amsterdam made a clean sweep with Tierrie Phillips being adjudged the most valuable player on show, J-Que Simpson took home the award for most goals with the best goalkeeper prize being awarded to Joel Davis. (Samuel Whyte)
