Dear Editor,
I noted with great humour that bastion of moral rectitude in the Cabinet, Minister Priya Manickchand, conveniently misrepresenting a glaring conflict of interest issue to that of an attack by men against women.
The fraudulent emotive appeal on the International Day Against the Girl Child that somehow this entire issue is one of “old men” who want to keep women down and women must shatter the glass ceiling etc is political tripe at its best. It is unfortunate that poor Mrs. Gitanjali Singh has to endure this kind of watery defence as well as a poor display of tact by Ms. Manickchand in bringing back sharply to the public eye an issue that was previously forgotten and buried. Not a very intelligent move by the Minister of Education.
Since Ms. Manickchand has donned her halo in this matter in her spirited public defence of principled matters I would like to have her answer the following questions:
1. How many lots of land did she acquire in Pradoville 2?
2. How much did she pay for each lot?
3. Which government entity did she pay this money to and when?
4. Did she sell a lot in Pradoville 2?
5. If so, how much did she sell it for and when?
6. Is it fair for her to sell a lot in Pradoville 2 soon after she got it while the rest of ordinary working class Guyanese have to wait ten years before they can sell off their land obtained from the State?
7. Did she pay a penalty to sell off her lot in Pradoville 2 before ten years like ordinary working class Guyanese have to?
8. What is the date of her transport of her lots in Pradoville 2?
9. Did she commence building her home in Pradoville 2 before she got a transport?
10. What was the final construction cost of her opulent home in Pradoville 2?
11. Did she take a mortgage to build it, if so, how much mortgage, the date of the mortgage and which bank?
12. Did she ever get land from the Ministry of Housing before?
13. Is she proud that she has personally benefitted at the taxpayers’ expense from land in a prime residential area for a fraction of the development cost built and developed exclusively for special PPP people like her so she can acquire it cheaply and sell it off as a profit for personal gain at a selling price that is probably several thousand percent higher than what she originally paid for?
14. Is she proud of the fact that her government through NICIL spent hundreds of millions of taxpayers’ dollars to first remove NCN Tower then build up and develop Pradoville 2 into prime first class real estate exclusively for selected PPP officials like her so they can profit personally from it?
I look forward to our upstanding Minister responding to these questions in the public interest since I am sure taxpayers will be happy to know the details of how their taxes are spent to enrich the fat cats in public office.
K. Khan
