Kings reign in win over Jets -but result null and void
Usually the team that controls the ‘boards’, wins the game, but that was not the case as the defending champions, Kings were out-rebounded, but amended that disadvantage through their outside marksmanship from Steve Neils (Jr.) to win the Trophy Stall Regulation Open Basketball title against Jets.
Centre/forward, Omally Sampson later named the Most Valuable Player, helped Neils shoot their way to a 66-60 win, and in the process maintained their status as the top-ranked club in the Mining Town of Linden.
However, that result became null and void after the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation had suspended the Linden Amateur Basketball Federation on that very day. “Please note that all LABA basketball activities are also suspended (including any now unsanctioned tournaments in process), and any player, referee or official who participates in any LABA activities will themselves be subject to sanctions,” the GABF suspension letter noted.
Nevertheless, Neils was the team’s top scorer with 21 points and also ‘dished’ nine assists while Orin Rose and Marvin Hartman punished Jets with only their captain, Kevin Joseph being able to answer to the outside game of the Kings duo.
Sampson had 13 points and 11 rebounds, which proved his worth to this team. Rose started the damage and ended with 15 points while Hartman got 12 points with seven rebounds.
Shooting guard, Kevin Joseph with 18 points and Shane Webster, who was the Best Defensive Player of the final, pulled down eight rebounds with three blocked shots and six assists along with his 13 points. Allister Webster dumped in 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
Kings entered the final with three losses and only qualified because they had beaten Half Mile Bulls, who finished with a similar record. They were up against the Jets who had inflicted one of those losses and with the title on the line, Kings rose to the occasion.
Kings’ snipers launched their missiles and tore down Jets’ ‘big man’ game, which resided in the Webster brothers, Shane and Allister. Even though they raked in their share of ‘boards’ and also scored, Jets team effort did not add up to supplant Kings.
Jets ran out of fuel and eventually Abdullah Hamid and Neils were given four free-throw shots, which they made to give the Kings the cushion needed in crunch-time to come away with a clear win to retain their crown.
The Half Mile Bulls beat Bankers Trust Falcons 64-51 in the game which preceded the final but this was arranged owed to the fact that Falcons had already secured the third position.
The Retriever Raiders forfeited their semifinal game last week against the Jets after refusing to omit the previously suspended Dwayne Roberts, who the GABF vindicated following a disciplinary hearing. However the LABA refused to adhere to the decision of the hearing which resulted in the GABF suspending the Linden sub-association.
