Guyana Boxing Board of Control Fight Fest…‘Bumpy’ road threatened as Clive ‘The Punisher’ Atwell takes on Jamaican, Glenroy ‘Bumpy’ Beckford tonight

Jamaican top boxer, Glenroy Beckford, goes by the sobriquet ‘Bumpy’ and shortly after arriving in Guyana Thursday morning last, he declared that Clive ‘The Punisher’ Atwell will be in for a ‘Bumpy’ ride when they clash over 8 rounds at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) this evening.
‘Bumpy,’ as he prefers to be addressed, sports a wiry physique with rippling abdominals and said he is ready for battle. He arrived in Guyana accompanied by his Coach, Wayne Sharpe, and has already started ‘mouthing up.’
“Meh come ya fo fight and meh done know that lots ah people gon be surprise at wha gon happen on fight night,” declared the confident Jamaican when Kaieteur Sport spoke with him at his hotel room moments after he arrived in Georgetown.
He said that he has been a regular feature on ‘The Contender,’ the Jamaica version of Guyana Fight Night, and is in top shape for tonight’s bout. He was very guarded in predicting the fight but explained that he is a versatile fighter with the ability to change his style and plans as the situation necessitates.
Mr. Sharp was just as confident as his charge but went a little further and predicted an outcome, “We come ya fo win and we nah leff nothing to dem judges because we done know wha fo expect,” he proclaimed while predicting an early knockout.
The confident Csoach reminded of the fight where another of his charges, Rudolph Hedge, had turned up the heat on Elton ‘The Bully’ Dharry in what boxing buffs labeled as one of the best local bouts for some time.
While Atwell will go all out to retain his unbeaten streak and dominance in the ‘square jungle’ with a decisive victory over Beckford, his sights will be riveted on November 22 when he is expected to begin his trek to world acclaim in the World Boxing Council 50th anniversary tournament against Justin Savvy of Benin Africa on November 22 next.
Nevertheless the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) Lightweight champion will just have to refocus, at least for one night, when he steps in the ring against the tough Jamaican tonight.
The Dexter Marques/Richard Williamson Bantamweight shindig over 8 rounds should be a classy and blistering affair. Marques may be the seasoned campaigner but Williamson is blessed with similar classy attributes and one suspect that the one with more determination and guts would cart off the spoils.
Williamson has since changed Coaches and is now under the tutelage of former Featherweight champion, Jeff Roberts. One suspects that Roberts will mould his charge in a rounded way and therefore he will be boxing and fighting as the situation demands.
Indeed a tough bout to call, this fight could very well boil down to a slugfest with the boxer that wants it bad enough emerging victorious.
Edmond Declou has always been a cool customer and enters all of his fight in a business-like manner. His opponent, Derick Richmond, a Berbician, has risen from virtual obscurity after upsetting Romeo Norville months after securing a draw against Syrian boxer, ‘The Dentist’ Mahmood.
His application and staunch determination has set him apart from the riff raff of pugilists at his level and Declou will want to take note rather than be complacent.
Kishawn Simon will be on the redemption trail after his debut loss to Patrick Boston and fights David Thomas. He said that he has reviewed his mistakes of his debut bout and will be out tonight to correct the error with a victory in focus.
Thomas has retained a stony silence and simply refused to be drawn into idle banter. They say that ‘empty barrels making the most noise’ so it stands to reason that Thomas’ reticence may mean he has a special ‘gift’ up his sleeve for his loquacious foe.
The amateurs will first take to the ring when the action gets underway with Under-16 fighters, Orin Bancroft and Anthony Miguel battling in the 105-109lbs class. Republican, Stephon Nedd will then face off with GDF representative, Mark Marshall in a Bantamweight bout while Nedd’s gym mate, Trevor King, will duke it out with Kevin Rodney (GDF) in a Middleweight clash. Another Republican, Anandram Dharamraj, will box with Stephon Gouveia in the Lightweight category.
Patrons will now be a part of the action and are asked to retain their stubs for the draw later in the night. Three prizes will be on offer and the first prize is one Digicel Blackberry cell phone. The second and third prizes are one pair Wiki sunglasses and 2 cases of premium beers, respectively.
Admission remains at $1000 for adults and $500 for children and this reasonable fee was made possible through support from several corporate entities including Digicel, Banks DIH Ltd, Giftland Office Max, Guyoil, King’s Jewellery World, Ministry of Tourism and Flight Jamaica. Bell time is 20:00hrs sharp.
