– Intends to target illegal mining
“We don’t have a difficulty with non nationals being involved in the mining sector or any sector, but they must conform to national laws.”
Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Robert Persaud registered those sentiments yesterday in reference to the four Brazilian miners killed Friday last when a 40-foot deep pit caved in at Arau, Region Seven.
He reiterated a ‘zero tolerance stance’ for illegal operations, adding that in the coming weeks more information pertaining to operation El Dorado will be forthcoming.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) has vowed to continue to enforce the Mining Regulations to reduce illegal mining and other illicit activities within the sector.
These operations intend to target illegal mining and unregulated mining activities, since many Brazilians have been caught engaging in illegal mining activities.
Operation El Dorado involved inspection of mining camps and operations to determine the status of the property being worked; verification of mining privileges and certificate of registration for persons employed; inspection of the requisite documentations, including dredge licenses and production books, sanitation, environmental and occupational health and safety compliances.
The Guyana Police Forces’ Tactical Services Unit also carries out checks for guns, ammunition and drugs, while an immigration team checks the status of foreign workers.
In most cases, these foreigners have no work-permits, certificates of registration and in other cases are found with expired visas.
The GGMC is being supported by the Guyana Police Force in the ongoing ‘Operation El Dorado’. Further, the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) have been urging the authorities to step up its campaign on illegal mining.
