Dear Editor,
Mr. Harry Gill is wrong on his views about Mr. David Granger (KN/23/9/2013: “Granger has accomplished nothing for those who voted for him”) I am forced to ask if Mr. Gill voted for Mr. Granger because if he did, then he has a legitimate right to voice his concerns. If he did not, then he has some other interest.
I suspect that that interest is to find the opposition leader wanting and to dissuade and discourage multitudes of people from supporting him. It will not work, because everyone knows that Mr. Gill unashamedly supports the government. Therefore, his views will always be seen in that context and the sincerity will remain in question.
Be that as it may, I wish to make two points:
First, Mr. David Granger has demonstrated nothing but astute leadership, deep intellect, and sheer determination in the face of the daunting challenges posed by the PPP/C Government against his efforts to represent all Guyanese. He has stood up to the PPP and many of them are coming in line with a culture that is characterized by transparency and accountability. He has consistently been exposing the lies of the PPP/C Government in and out of parliament. I appreciate the fact that this might count for nothing for Mr. Gill, but for the hundreds of thousands of Guyanese who are suffering it means a lot; the difference between slums and mansions, vulnerable communities and gated communities, crime and career.
Second, Mr. Granger has always demonstrated his willingness for compromise to push the concept of governance. Recall his call for a tripartite committee to look at the national budget. The rest is history. And what about Mr. Gill’s call on the PPP/C to compromise? The PPP/C is a minority government behaving as a majority government. More people in this country voted for the combined opposition than the PPP/C government. Yet, the wishes of the majority are relegated to the last part of the PPP/C’s agenda.
Mr. Gill should ask the Government questions like: What is the position with the Local Government Bills? What is the position of the Procurement Commission? What about the Office of Ombudsman?
It pains me to see people like Mr. Gill going to the trouble to make public comments, in the press, in a one-sided manner without thinking that readers are not stupid and that they are seeing through all the cover, Mr. Gill and others like him are attempting to spread on the shameful acts of a regime that has diverted from a righteousness path. Remember the words of Bob Marley: “There’s a natural mystic blowing through the air.” Listen carefully, Mr. Gill. Listen!
