The Pepsi senior Inter-County 50-over cricket competition was officially launched yesterday at the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Pavilion and Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) Brand Executive Larry Wills said the Company was pleased to once again be associated with cricket in Guyana.
“We are very pleased to announce sponsorship of the first ever Pepsi Inter-County 50-over competition. While this sponsorship is new to Pepsi it’s not new to DDL, since we have been proud sponsors of this tournament for over 15 years,” Wills informed.
“Pepsi and DDL have strong ties to cricket around the world. DDL was a major sponsor of the recently concluded CPL and Pepsi is proud to be the official beverage and snack partner of the ICC, a partnership which of cricket enthusiasts from around the world to connect with the game,” the DDL official told the gathering.

Wills said Pepsi continues to sponsor several grassroots programme which are intended to develop cricket at a local level.
“We recognize that investment at the developmental stage is critical if we are to continue to perform on the big stage.”
“It is for this reason that this particular tournament is important to us. This tournament gives an opportunity for our youngsters to showcase their talent and it is out of this tournament that the selection is done for the National team to compete in the Regional 50 overs tournament later this year,” Wills continued.
Wills took the opportunity to encourage members of the public to come out and support our young cricketers.
President of the GCB Dru Bahadur said he is excited about the competition and commended DDL for supporting the Inter-County competition for over 15 years.
The GCB top man also encouraged the Media to play their role in promoting the tournament by providing coverage of the matches. He added that the preliminary rounds, all fixed for Bourda, will be free to gain entry into the grounds.
“We (GCB) will have discussions with our sponsors before we fix a price for the Final at Albion on September 29. Whenever matches are played at Albion we always expect a lot of people to come out and watch,” Bahadur said.
Competitions Committee Chairman of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Colin Europe informed that because of financial reasons a fourth team (the President’s X1) was not included this year. However, he said next year the GCB is hoping to have the President’s X1 once more.
“This year two bonus points will be given to teams who score more than 300 runs in their innings. If the team that makes a 300-plus total but loses the game they will get one point. Two points will also be given for dismissing the opponents for less than 150,” Europe informed.
Demerara face Essequibo in the opening match on September 21 at Bourda while the second round features Demerara against Berbice on September 24 at the same venue before the final rounds involves Berbice and Essequibo at Bourda on September 26.
The final is fixed for Albion on September 29 between the two top teams in the three-team competition.
