Hailed as resounding success by Mohamed; Eastman wins Juvenile, Greaves takes feature

The 37th annual National Sports Commission sponsored Teach Them Young Cycling Coaching Programme officially ended yesterday with the staging of an 11-Race Meet at the National Park where
the programme started in 1977.
This year’s programme has been hailed as a resounding success by National Coach Hassan Mohamed MS who has been associated with it from its inception. Mohamed in brief remarks before the presentation stated that the 67 registered riders was the largest field ever in the history of the programme, which has been the foundation of Guyana’s cycling.
On the track the eager riders give it their all on a sunny day. Emerging as the top rider among the juveniles was Hamza Eastman who won the 10-lap contest in 22 Minutes 55.53 Seconds. Shaquille Agard and Mario King closed out the top three positions in that order.
The feature race of the day which attracted as usual, the cream of the crop in Guyana, 22 in number, saw Alonzo Greaves, arguably the best sprinter in Guyana, taking the top podium spot in One Hour 17 Minutes 12.79 Seconds from Raynauth Jeffrey in a two way battle.
The pace of the race in the first ten laps and the reaction by the majority of riders suggested that something special was in the making. As it turned out, by lap 13, twelve (12) of the riders were lapped by Greaves, Jeffrey, Robin Persaud and Shaquille Agard, the quartet had established a commanding lead and at one point looked like they were going to emulate that achievement with the chasing pack.
Averting being lapped were Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Hamza Eastman, Alex Mendes and Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton the third to sixth placed finishers.
The chasing pack had connected on lap 18, but mere seconds after they did, Greaves and Jeffrey separated themselves and were never caught. Persaud was not able to complete the race due to an accident.
Junior Niles was once again triumphant in the veteran’s 5-lap Under-50 year’s race which he won in 12 Minutes 32.68 Seconds; Maurice Fagundes was the lone Over-60 competitor.
