DEAR EDITOR,
I feel it is necessary to warn my readers and would-be readers in Guyana that a prominent malware organization is infecting computers using my book, The Thomas Carroll Affair, as a lure. The organization, operating under “RARshare,” is offering my book for free. So is another illegal website “Mobilism.” (It put up at US$34 reward for anyone who would cooperate with them)
What is important to know is that RARshare makes money by inserting harmful tracking software in personal computers. This is big business. It has gotten sophisticated enough that tracking software can be implanted in pictures and designs downloaded.
One of the recent tricks is to create a Youtube video which leads to a free book offer. If anyone takes the ‘free’ offer up, he or she will be flooded with damaging programmes. Some of these, for all intents and purposes, can take over your computer. I would feel terrible if anyone lost the functionality of his or her personal computer due to this scam.
If anyone is interested in acquiring a copy of The Thomas Carroll Affair, please contact Austin’s bookstore in Georgetown, Guyana or go to Amazon US or Canada. David Casavis
