On many occasions cricket fans have had to bear the disappointment of truncated matches or in some cases, the abortion of play after heavy rains had subsided. Sometimes, after the sun manages to peek out from behind the dark clouds and the subsequent mopping up period, officials resort to the Duckworth/Lewis system and fans eventually see some cricket.
With no such system in boxing, fans that had travelled from Georgetown and other parts of the country were forced to return home without seeing a punch in the professional segment of the 28th edition of Guyana Fight Night (GFN) at the Uitvlugt Community Centre, West Coast Demerara Saturday evening last.
This was after a mini storm hit the West Coast just after the amateur segment had concluded and sent the erected tents crumbling to the ground with light debris sailing through the air and patrons scrambling to safety.
However, fans were not totally disappointed as they were able to witness the amateur segment of the card as the inclement weather held over that period. It was during the half hour intermission that the heavens opened and torrents of rain, accompanied by an exceptionally strong breeze disrupted activities. The tent erected over the ring defiantly stood its ground but several other small structures set up to facilitate the spectators caved in from the onslaught.
Fans then scuttled for safety under the southern section of the building even as the venue experienced a mild ‘Gilbert.’ In the end, the organizers were forced to abort the card while the disappointed patrons and equally disappointed Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) officials and boxers were forced to leave the venue without a (professional) punch being thrown. President of the GBBC, Peter Abdool, was also disappointed by the turn of events.
He said that he knew that the rains were a threat but made every effort to counteract the situation by setting up the tents. He said that his executives will make every effort attempt to book the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) and once successful, will hold the card within a week.
Meanwhile, the hyped up boxers left the venue very disappointed while their equally hyped up fans were forced to leave the venue without seeing a punch—a professional punch that is.
