Team Coco’s Raynauth Jeffrey captured the top spot comfortably when the 14th Castrol Father’s Day 50-mile Cycle Road Race sponsored by Guyoil was contested yesterday on the West Demerara.
Jeffrey, who also won a few days ago in the Ancient County of Berbice, stopped the clock at One Hour 55 Minutes 31 Seconds, almost two minutes ahead of the second place finisher, Shane Boodram to record another convincing win in his budding career.
When the race got off at the Wales Police Station, West Bank Demerara with 52-starters in pursuit of glory in the various categories, Jeffrey and current Road Race Champion Orville Hinds of the Linden Bauxite Flyers Cycle Club, eased away from the pack at Nismes on the West Bank.
It was always going to be tough going breaking away that early with the best riders in the land also in contention, but the pair was up to the task. Unfortunately, Hinds suffered a puncture on the upward journey and that put paid to his quest to feature among the top six.
Jeffrey however, maintained his place as the leader and never faltered in that regard. Third was, Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Junior Niles (4th), Shaquel Agard (5th) and Mark Harris 6th. Seven of the eight sprint prizes on offer went to Jeffrey with the other to Hinds.
Agard, who also rode a fine race, was the first junior to cross the finish line followed by Harris. Mario King placed third.
Hazina Barrett did a fine job in pedaling to victory over Naiomi Singh in the female category, such was her performance yesterday that she even crossed the line well ahead of many of her more seasoned male counterparts, a rare occurrence.
Talim Shaw was the top veteran, Ian ‘Deaf Boy’ Jackson placed second with Kennard Lovell third.
Clyde Jacobs rode an admirable race to take the top podium spot in the mountain bike category. He crossed the line ahead of Lennon Dick and seasoned campaigner Ozia Macullay. Taking the Over-60 prize was Montgomery Parris.
